Congonhas
A municipality in Minas Gerais, south of Belo Horizonte, known for the Baroque ensemble of the Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos.
Congonhas brings together Baroque art, popular devotion and a mountain landscape in one of Minas Gerais’s most striking cultural destinations. The Bom Jesus de Matosinhos ensemble holds landmark works by Aleijadinho.
A visit to Congonhas unfolds across the prophets’ churchyard, the church’s Rococo interior and the Passos da Paixão—a devotional sequence tracing Christ’s Passion—scattered along the hillside leading to the sanctuary. Soapstone sculptures and polychrome wooden groups turn the route into an open-air reading of the religious art created during the gold cycle. The Museu de Congonhas deepens the experience by interpreting this heritage’s historical, social and devotional dimensions.

📜 History and context
The sanctuary’s origins lie in a vow made by miner Feliciano Mendes, who began raising funds to build the church in 1757. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, builders, woodcarvers and painters worked on the complex. The Passos groups were created between 1796 and 1799; from 1800 to 1805, Aleijadinho and his assistants made the Prophets for the churchyard.
🌍 Global importance
Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985 under cultural criteria i and iv, the Santuário de Bom Jesus de Congonhas is recognized as a singular achievement of Christian art in Latin America. The site’s universal value lies in the meeting of architecture, sculpture and pilgrimage practices preserved in an ensemble of high integrity.
